Waze has launched three exciting new features aimed at improving the user experience and offering more accurate route suggestions. These updates—locomotive mode, hands-free voice control, and high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane support—are among the most anticipated by users. Traditionally, navigation apps have offered options like walking, driving, or public transport, but Waze is now expanding its vehicle categories to include motorcycles. This addition not only broadens the app’s usability but also provides tailored route planning for riders.
With the introduction of locomotive mode, Waze uses data from other users who also choose this option to create optimized routes. This means narrower streets that are inaccessible to cars can now be considered in route planning. As a result, motorcycle riders will receive more accurate estimated times of arrival (ETAs), making their commutes more efficient. The more people use the locomotive mode, the better the system becomes at predicting travel times, offering a more personalized and reliable experience.
Another major update is the "Talk to Waze" feature, which allows drivers to keep their hands on the wheel while using voice commands. By saying “OK Waze,†users can initiate a variety of actions, such as setting a destination, checking traffic conditions, getting route previews, finding parking, refueling, reporting accidents, and even contacting emergency services. This feature enhances both convenience and safety, making it easier for drivers to stay focused on the road.
In addition, Waze has integrated HOV lane support into its routing system. This is a first for a navigation app, as it leverages data from the Waze Map, which includes HOV lane information contributed by the community. Users simply need to enable the feature in the app settings, and Waze will automatically consider HOV lanes when calculating the best route. This helps reduce travel time and promotes carpooling, especially in areas where HOV lanes are available.
Currently, HOV support is available in 22 U.S. states and Canadian cities including Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. The feature will continue to expand across North America in the coming months. With these updates, Waze continues to evolve, offering smarter, safer, and more personalized navigation for all types of travelers.
