Sino-Korea panel wars BOE has become ace forward

In the global panel market, 2016 still saw South Korea's two giants, LG and Samsung, dominating the industry. However, as BOE invested heavily in expanding its manufacturing facilities and launched aggressive counterattacks, the gap between Chinese and Korean panel manufacturers began to shrink significantly. Particularly in the large-size panel segment, BOE started making a strong push and even managed to secure top positions. In the first three quarters of this year, its market share surged, reaching the number one spot globally. As the competition between China and South Korea intensifies, BOE is well-positioned to become the leader of the Chinese panel industry and play a crucial role as a key player. According to OFweek Display Network, data shows that in the third quarter of this year, BOE captured 21.7% of the global large-size (over 9 inches) panel market, securing the top position. This was followed by LG Display, Innolux, AU Optronics, and Samsung Electronics. This shift highlights a major transformation taking place in the global panel industry. ![Image: The proportion of large-sized panels among the world’s top five panel makers in Q3](http://i.bosscdn.com/blog/Ch/Mk/J1/o_3qWIN70XAAEiARi570UAAjdWQP778gAASIZ198.jpg) Analysts suggest that in recent years, the mainland's LCD panel industry chain has been continuously improving, with production capacity gradually increasing and becoming more substantial. In particular, BOE finally achieved a breakthrough in the large-size panel market. In the third quarter of 2017, it claimed the largest share of the market with a 21.7%占有率. Several factors contributed to this success: First, rising demand for large-size display screens in notebooks, TVs, and other devices; second, full-scale operations from Fuzhou's 8.5-generation line and multiple high-generation lines; and third, consistent and stable expansion of production capacity. Industry insiders estimate that global shipments of large-size panels grew by approximately 3.8% in 2017. Additionally, due to the shift of Samsung's 7.5-generation lines and LG Display's production capacity toward OLED, the global supply of large-size panels faced a shortage in 2017. In fact, the tightness in large-size panel production became evident as early as the second quarter of 2017. Compared to previous years, the second quarter is typically an off-peak season. However, this year, the 40- to 45-inch panel segment was affected by a sharp price increase and reduced production capacity from the previous period, leading to losses in related products. Meanwhile, the 65-inch panel experienced rapid growth, marking a rare but significant trend. Overall, the second quarter showed that even during off-season, demand remained strong, highlighting a changing landscape in the panel industry.
