Editor's Note
In real-world applications, battery pack control boards are often exposed to moisture, condensation, and electrolyte corrosion, which can lead to short circuits. As a result, protecting the battery control board from these environmental factors is crucial. Proper protection ensures that the board maintains optimal electrical performance over time.
Micro gravure coating is a type of gravure coating process that falls under roll coating. It differs from traditional gravure coating mainly in the direction of movement of the anilox roll, the back roll, and the substrate. With the rising demand for high-performance films and the increasing adoption of wet coating techniques, micro gravure coating is expected to play a significant role in the high-end functional film industry.

**1. Micro Gravure Coating Principle and Process**
The micro gravure coating method uses an anilox roll, which is mounted on a bearing and partially immersed in the coating pan. As the roll rotates, it picks up the coating material. A flexible scraper then meters the material, and the coating is transferred to the substrate as it moves in the opposite direction. This reverse motion helps achieve a uniform and thin layer of coating.
The rotation direction of the anilox roll is opposite to that of the substrate, ensuring that the material is evenly applied without pressing against the roll. If the directions were the same, the material could separate, leading to uneven coating or residue on the roll.
**Advantages of Micro Gravure Coating:**
- Enables very thin coatings on delicate materials.
- Eliminates defects like smearing or wrinkling due to the absence of a back pressure roller.
- The light contact between the scraper and the anilox roll reduces wear.
- The small size and lightweight of the anilox roll make it easy to replace.
- Reverse coating allows for a smooth and consistent coating thickness.
**Applications of Micro Gravure Coating:**
This technique is widely used in the production of light-shielding films, optical films, lithium battery materials, composite tapes, protective films, and more.
**2. Common Defects and Solutions in Micro Gravure Coating**
Defects in micro gravure coating can arise from various factors, including environmental cleanliness, system stability, equipment accuracy, material consistency, and substrate quality. Additionally, issues such as the structure of the anilox roll, capillary number (Ca), base speed, wrap angle, and cleaning efficiency can also contribute to problems.
Common defects include: horizontal stripes, fine vertical lines, vertical streaks, rib edges, air entrapment, peeling, uneven coating, and poor leveling.
**Horizontal Stripes**
*Cause:* Misalignment of the anilox roll, motor vibration, mechanical instability, or worn bearings.
*Solution:* Ensure proper installation of the anilox roll and scraper system. Reduce vibrations and maintain the drive system’s precision.
**Fine Vertical Lines**
*Cause:* High speed ratio, excessive blade pressure, low tension, or incorrect wrap angle.
*Solution:* Adjust the speed ratio, properly install the blade, and optimize the tension and wrap angle.
**Vertical Streaks**
*Cause:* Air bubbles on the anilox roll, high viscosity, or improper coating thickness.
*Solution:* Install baffles to reduce air bubbles, use lower viscosity materials, and adjust the coating thickness accordingly.
**Uneven Coating or Thickness Control Issues**
*Cause:* Worn blades, unstable speed, mismatched speeds, incorrect wrap angle, or deformed rolls.
*Solution:* Replace blades, improve system accuracy, adjust the speed ratio, and ensure correct roll alignment.
**Ideas (Mottling or Non-Wetting)**
*Cause:* Substrate surface tension variation, impurities in the material, or mesh clogging.
*Solution:* Ensure substrate uniformity and filter the material to remove impurities.
**Poor Leveling**
*Cause:* Incompatible viscosity or surface tension, fast-evaporating solvents, or thin coating.
*Solution:* Adjust the material properties, use mixed solvents, balance surface tensions, and consider a higher mesh anilox roll.
By addressing these common issues, manufacturers can significantly improve the quality and reliability of micro gravure coated products, making this technique a valuable tool in modern coating processes.
