Each packet contains a header with additional metadata, such as the Packet Identifier (PID), which helps the receiver identify and route the correct data.
One of the major advantages of the TS format is its ability to support dynamic bandwidth allocation. By using PID values, different streams—such as video, audio, and subtitles—can be multiplexed together and transmitted efficiently. This feature also allows for the insertion of encryption keys in real time, making it ideal for pay-TV services.
Additionally, the TS format is highly scalable. Multiple elementary streams can be combined into a single transport stream, which can then be further multiplexed with other streams to increase the overall bandwidth. This flexibility makes it well-suited for large-scale broadcast systems.
Another significant benefit of the TS stream is its strong error resilience. Because each packet is independent and has a fixed size, the system can recover from errors without affecting the rest of the stream. This makes it particularly useful in environments where signal interference or data loss is common, such as in satellite transmissions.
In terms of playback, most media players do not natively support TS files. However, by renaming the file extension to .mpg or .mpeg, many standard players can still play the content, although some advanced features may be limited.
The formation of a TS stream involves several steps: first, the raw video and audio data is compressed into an elementary stream. Then, this stream is packaged into PES packets with timing information. Finally, the PES packets are segmented into fixed-size transport packets, which are then combined with program-specific information (PSI) to create a complete TS stream.
