Chicago plans to replace 85% of the city's street lights with smart LED street lights

Chicago has embarked on a significant initiative to replace around 250,000 conventional streetlights with smart LED lights under what is being called the nation's most extensive smart streetlight project. This ambitious four-year effort involves Renewable energy firm Ameresco partnering with IoT solutions provider Iron Spring Networks. Together, they aim to transform approximately 85% of Chicago’s current street lighting system into energy-efficient smart LED units. The multi-stage modernization process is scheduled to commence during the summer of 2017, as reported by Smart Cities World. These new LED streetlights are expected to cut electricity usage by 50 to 75% compared to traditional streetlights. Silver Spring Networks' IPv6 platform will play a crucial role here, allowing remote management of these lights based on real-time requirements. This platform also facilitates proactive monitoring, ensuring swift action when maintenance is needed due to any failures. For the initial phase of installation, at least half of the newly installed LED streetlights will be manufactured locally within Chicago facilities. Additionally, at least 50% of the workforce involved in these projects will consist of Chicago residents. In the beginning stages, a thorough assessment of all existing streetlights will take place. During this critical phase, a minimum of half of the workers will come from graduates of vocational school programs, construction tech training courses, or apprenticeship programs offered through Chicago’s public schools. Mike Bell, an executive at Silver Spring Networks, highlighted that this project represents one of the largest modernization endeavors in the U.S. so far. He expressed enthusiasm about Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s commitment to enhancing citizen living standards using cutting-edge IoT technologies, viewing it as a stepping stone towards broader smart city applications. The smart LED streetlights will remain under the ownership and operational oversight of the City of Chicago, supported by Silver Spring Networks' Managed Services along with their Streetlight.Vision Control and Management System software. The economic advantages of implementing such an intelligent streetlight network extend beyond just cost savings; they also aid cities in managing resources more efficiently while promoting sustainability goals. Integration into the Chicago 311 system ensures seamless communication between residents and municipal services. Furthermore, the Chicago Public Construction Fund (CIT) will collaborate closely with the Chicago Department of Transportation, the Innovation and Technology Department, and the Chicago Parks office throughout this procurement initiative. As part of our ongoing commitment to transparency and engagement, we invite you to stay updated with further developments regarding this transformative project impacting our community’s infrastructure.
