Qualcomm recently announced a 5G new air interface millimeter wave prototype system based on the 5G NR Release-15 specification. This system is designed to promote large-scale testing and commercialization of 5G technology in mobile ecosystems. It aims to ensure that 3GPP-compliant 5G infrastructure and devices will be ready for deployment in 2019. The prototype operates in the mmWave band above 24 GHz and demonstrates advanced 5G capabilities for high-speed mobile broadband in real-world environments.
The system also showcases Qualcomm’s optimized mmWave RF front-end design in smartphone-sized devices, addressing challenges such as signal blockage and terminal design. Christiano Amon, Executive Vice President and QCT President at Qualcomm, said: “We’ve been committed to developing 5G millimeter-wave technology to enhance mobile broadband services. Our 5G prototype shows that continuous mobile broadband and smartphone-compatible terminals are evolving steadily for 2019 deployment. This reaffirms Qualcomm’s leadership in driving the next generation of wireless technology.â€
5G will support three main application scenarios: enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), mission-critical services (URLLC), and massive IoT. Among these, eMBB focuses on expanding coverage and increasing network capacity. A wider coverage means better signal strength, while increased capacity allows for more devices to connect simultaneously and handle large data volumes.
