Both laser projection and smart TVs serve as home-level large-screen display devices. Their rivalry dates back to before the era of smart TVs. According to data from Ove Cloud Network, domestic color TV sales totaled 21.11 million units in the first half of this year, a 7% decrease compared to the same period in 2016, with the industry's profit margin falling below 1%, marking a new low since 2011.
On the flip side, the laser projection industry, which had been sluggish in the first half of the year, saw explosive growth. Sales figures skyrocketed: according to Yikang statistics, laser TV sales grew by 477.8% year-over-year in March alone, with a 410.71% increase! The vibrant atmosphere within the industry starkly contrasted with the bleak sales performance of color TVs.
Is the 'Replacement Theory' Premature?
Despite the overlap in functionality between projectors and TVs, the two operate on fundamentally different display principles. As a result, laser projectors must incur exponentially higher costs to achieve the display quality of smart TVs.
Today, 4K has become a standard feature in the smart TV industry. A 55-inch smart TV equipped with a 4K IPS screen and MEMC dynamic compensation, sufficient for most household needs, costs more than 5,000 yuan. Even a 1080P entry-level laser projector costs at least 10,000 yuan.
