WiFi is booming and the number of hotspots will grow by 350% in 2015

The Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA, an industry association that aims to promote the next-generation WiFi experience) pointed out in a report published today that the number of global public WiFi hotspots will grow by 350% by 2015, and this number does not even include "Community hot spots", and multiple users share a WiFi access point, and this number is as high as 4.5 million. The research of the Wireless Broadband Alliance was conducted by market research company InformaTelecoms & Media, which surveyed 259 service providers and WiFi providers.

The new hotspots that are expected to be deployed in China (China Mobile) and Japan will cover three types of venues with open outdoor thermal zones (such as parks), outdoor regional thermal zones (such as famous tourist attractions) and transportation hubs (such as airports).

Chris Bruce, chairman of the Wireless Broadband Alliance and CEO of BT, said that the results of this survey show that the world is about to usher in a "golden era of public WiFi", and the number of hotspot deployments is expected to surge.

The survey results also show that 58% of operators (including 47% of mobile operators) believe that WiFi hotspots are very important or critical to their customer experience; a platform that enables them to provide value-added services.

Chris Bruce pointed out that the growth of mobile data is a key factor in the rapid deployment of WiFi hotspots. The report of the Wireless Broadband Alliance emphasizes that by 2014, global mobile data traffic is expected to reach 16.84 million TB. Operators plan to deal with the impact of this growth by introducing new pricing strategies and hot spot offloading.

The survey also found that the number of smartphones included in WiFi hotspots will soon surpass that of laptops. Laptops currently access less than half of the total number of hotspots (48%), while smartphones account for 36% and tablets account for 10%.

Smartphones in Asia Pacific and North America have surpassed laptops in terms of hotspot access. In Latin America, smartphones and laptops are equally divided. Respondents said they believe that the deployment of LTE mobile broadband will not affect the growth of WiFi hotspots.

The Wireless Broadband Alliance pointed out that this report highlights several barriers to the adoption and use of public Wi-Fi hotspots. , Including cumbersome authentication procedures, access costs, users to find existing networks and security issues, etc., a British operator recently reported that only 20% of the company's users access existing free public hotspots.

However, the Wireless Broadband Alliance said that the next-generation hotspot (NGH, currently in the experimental stage) will overcome the issues highlighted in the report.

Bruce pointed out: "The next-generation hotspot experiment is breaking through other obstacles, and a simple and safe user experience will help the number of hotspot usage continue to soar."

"At that time, users can use their mobile phone SIM card for verification, and then seamlessly roam between the cellular and WiFi networks, thereby reducing concerns about authentication, network discovery and security. Operators can also gradually use public WiFi as broadband Or part of a mobile service plan to reduce access costs. "

The results of this global survey represent the opinions of 259 public WiFi experts around the world, of which more than half come from operators operating in major developed markets around the world.
