Dow Corning releases new phenyl silicon-based LEDs

[Text / Long Zonghui] On June 11, Dow Corning released three new LED products based on Dow Corning silicone materials: high-profile LED package silicone, silicon lens and bracket, and heat sink.


According to Dr. Maruyama Kazuo, Global Product Director of Dow Corning Lighting Division, the new high refractive index phenyl silica gel has a refractive index of 1.54, which is better than traditional methyl silica gel to help customers. Achieve LED designs with higher efficacy output and lumen maintenance.



"Phenyl silica gel has a higher refractive index than methyl silica gel. However, under high temperature test, the light decay has a certain degree of light decay compared to methyl silica gel. Therefore, it must be designed according to the device. Ask for a good choice." Maruyama and said.

In the past, the lens materials used in the industry were generally plastic and glass, but the thermal stability of the plastic was insufficient and the glass could solve the problem of thermal stability, but it was difficult to easily make irregular shapes. Silicon materials absorb the advantages of both, and are the development trend of new lens materials in the future. Dow Corning has already made relevant technical reserves. This silicon lens has won the prestigious Technology Innovation Award at the American International Lighting Exhibition and is the only material selected. Dow Corning is currently developing a new silicon-based technology that will maintain uniform light without sorting. However, the biggest problem with the popularity of silicon lenses and brackets is the cost. In the future, if mass production is not to be carried out, the price will not fall to the level of glass and plastic.

The thermal pad is the focus of Dow Corning's new product release. This new product uses liquid silicone printing technology, which can be easily “printed” between the chip and the base to enhance heat dissipation. “Traditional heat-dissipating materials generally make a large film and then cut it, so there is a lot of waste. This cooling pad uses printing technology to effectively avoid waste.” Dr. Maruyama and Dr. Maruyama said.

In 1973, Dow Corning established its first office in Hong Kong, China. In recent years, Dow Corning's business in China has gradually concentrated on the relevant application areas of LED lighting. Dow Corning has more than 10 years of experience in silicon related research and development, and holds many product patents.

“There are many companies on the market that are highly imitation of Dow Corning’s products. We reserve the right to pursue this.” Dr. Maruyama said that Dow Corning is actively responding to the “Responsible Care” initiative initiated by the American Chemistry Council in pursuit of lower standards.
