PI Introduces LED Driver Reference Design for T8 Lamp Replacement Applications

On December 4, Power Integrations, Inc. (Nasdaq: POWI), a leader in high-voltage integrated circuits for energy-efficient power conversion, released two high-efficiency, non-isolated, high-power applications for T8 lamp replacement applications. Factor (PF) LED driver reference design.

The new design features very few components and a simple core material and single-sided board design that delivers an industry-leading 14.2 W/in3 power density. The LED driver is based on Power Integrations' LinkSwitch-PL series IC device LNK460KG. Detailed circuit descriptions are available in DER-337 (high voltage input) and DER-345 (low voltage input). Both drives feature a single-stage, non-isolated topology that allows the driver to be only 8 mm thick – enough to fit behind the LEDs of the T8 tube.

The buck-boost (DER-337) or buck (DER-345) configuration provides a power factor of 0.9 or higher and a low THD to meet the EN61000-3-2 C limit. The design is compliant with EMI standards and easily meets EN55015 (EMI) Class B specifications. The integrated single-stage driver IC controls both the PFC and the constant current output, allowing the design to have fewer than 30 components. The drives are 92% (DER-337) and 89% (DER-345), respectively, with an output of 20 W (output voltage 85 V, output current 240 mA).
