The core of a typical image sensor is either a CCD (charge-coupled device) or a CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) unit. Both technologies are widely used in commercial cameras, but modern sensors predominantly use CMOS due to manufacturing advantages. These sensors are often integrated with optics to create wafer-level cameras, commonly used in fields like biology and microscopy, as illustrated in Figure 1.

Image sensors are designed for specific applications, offering varying levels of sensitivity and image quality. To understand the differences between them, it's helpful to review manufacturer specifications. For instance, achieving a balance between silicon-based performance and dynamic response requires optimizing the size and composition of each photodiode for a given manufacturing process.
In computer vision, sampling theory plays a crucial role, particularly the Nyquist frequency, which determines the minimum pixel resolution needed to capture details accurately. The sensor’s resolution and optical system must work together to ensure that features of interest are imaged clearly. This means that the sampling frequency should be at least twice the smallest feature size to avoid aliasing. However, in practice, determining exact pixel characteristics can be challenging.
To achieve optimal performance, camera systems must be calibrated under various lighting and distance conditions. Calibration helps determine pixel noise, dynamic range, and other sensor properties. It also allows for handling noise, nonlinear responses, and pixel artifacts, while modeling geometric distortions. Simple calibration methods using test patterns with gradients in grayscale, color, and pixel size can help visualize these effects.
Sensor materials vary, with silicon being the most common. However, materials like gallium are used in specialized applications, such as infrared imaging. Image sensor resolutions can range from single-pixel devices used in industrial scanning to high-resolution 2D arrays found in consumer cameras. Sensor configurations include CCD, CMOS, BSI, and Foveon, each with its own advantages.
Silicon sensors have a nonlinear spectral response, being more sensitive to near-infrared than visible light. As shown in Figure 2, this response curve peaks around 900 nm and drops significantly in the blue and ultraviolet ranges. Removing the IR filter from a camera increases its sensitivity to near-infrared light.

When raw data is converted into digital pixels, it reflects the sensor’s spectral response. Manufacturers compensate for this in their designs, but application-specific calibration should still account for color response variations.
Photodiode size is critical in image sensors. Smaller photodiodes capture fewer photons, which can lead to color correction challenges if they are smaller than the wavelength of visible light. Sensor manufacturers optimize component sizes to ensure balanced color imaging, as seen in Figure 3. However, very small sensors may be noisier, while larger ones increase material costs and complexity.

Sensor configurations differ, including mosaic, Foveon, and BSI (back-side illuminated). Mosaic sensors use color filters over individual pixels, while Foveon sensors rely on depth-sensitive color absorption. BSI sensors improve light collection by repositioning wiring, allowing larger photodiodes.
The layout of sensor elements affects color response. For example, Figure 5 shows different mosaic arrangements, including white, RGB, and CYM components. These configurations influence how color and spatial resolution are optimized during processing.

Sensor size also impacts lens design. Larger sensors allow for bigger lenses, capturing more light and improving performance in low-light conditions. Aspect ratios, such as 4:3 or 3:2, affect pixel geometry and are chosen based on application needs. Understanding these details helps in designing effective sensor processing and image preprocessing techniques.
