IBM Watson IoT headquarters officially put into use

It is clear that the building serves more than just as an office for IBM researchers. It will also be a hub where practical research and collaboration with customers and partners take place, fostering innovation in real-world applications.

IBM Watson IoT headquarters officially put into use

Yesterday evening, IBM hosted its first "Genius of Things" summit in Munich. As previously reported by Lei Feng.com, the event focused on IBM's latest Internet of Things strategy, highlighting how the company is pushing forward in this rapidly evolving field.

Back in October, IBM announced a $200 million investment to establish a new global headquarters for the IBM Watson IoT business unit in Munich, Germany. After five months of construction, the facility was officially opened and is now fully operational.

At the summit, IBM officially unveiled the new headquarters. According to official details, the building spans 39 floors. However, according to reports from Lei Feng.com, it's not just a workspace for IBM employees—it’s a collaborative space where customers and partners can work alongside IBM teams. The first companies to join include Avnet, BNP Paribas, CapGemini, and Tech Mahindra, who will set up development teams to create the industry’s first cognitive joint lab.

As part of IBM's broader plan, the Munich headquarters will focus on key areas such as blockchain, security, smart transportation, and healthcare—essentially leveraging AI to drive IoT applications. IBM hopes that these partner companies will help accelerate the adoption of Watson IoT solutions and services. According to IBM, building an IoT ecosystem represents a mutually beneficial partnership.

Harriet Green, General Manager of IBM Watson IoT, Cognitive Interaction, and Education, stated, “Our progress in the Internet of Things has reached a tipping point. We currently have over 6,000 customers worldwide, many of whom are eager to collaborate with us. The global Watson IoT Center is working closely with us to drive innovation. Together, we aim to build a new global IoT ecosystem that explores how cognitive technologies and IoT can transform industries and public services.”

Fernando Alvarez, Senior Vice President of CapGemini Global Alliance, added, “We chose to combine our technology and business experts with IBM’s team to deepen our relationship and speed up digital transformation for our clients. Our employees and customers will gain full access to IBM’s technology, expertise, and resources, significantly reducing time-to-market.”

In addition, IBM has announced partnerships with companies like Visa and Bosch, aiming to develop tailored solutions for the payments and industrial sectors. These collaborations signal a strong commitment to expanding the reach and impact of Watson IoT across various industries.
