It is clear that the building is more than just an office for IBM researchers. It serves as a hub where practical research and collaboration with customers and partners take place, fostering innovation in real-world applications.
Yesterday evening, IBM hosted the first IBM Genius of Things summit in Munich. As reported by Lei Feng.com (public account: Lei Feng), the event focused on IBM’s latest Internet of Things strategy, highlighting its vision for the future of connected technologies.
Back in October, IBM announced a $200 million investment to establish a new global headquarters for the IBM Watson IoT business unit in Munich, Germany. After five months of construction and preparation, the facility was officially opened last week.
At the summit, IBM officially revealed details about the new headquarters. According to official reports, the building spans 39 floors. However, according to Lei Feng.com, it is not merely an office for IBM staff. The space is designed for collaborative research with clients and partners, aiming to drive real-world IoT solutions. Among the first companies to join are Avnet, BNP Paribas, CapGemini, and Tech Mahindra, who will set up development teams to form the industry’s first cognitive joint lab.
As part of IBM’s broader strategy, the Munich headquarters will focus on areas such as blockchain, security, smart transportation, and healthcare—essentially leveraging AI to advance IoT applications. IBM hopes that the companies based there will help accelerate the adoption of Watson IoT solutions and services. According to IBM, this partnership represents a win-win for both sides, creating a stronger IoT ecosystem.
Harriet Green, General Manager of IBM Watson IoT, Cognitive Interaction, and Education, stated, “Our innovation in the Internet of Things has reached a tipping point. We currently have over 6,000 customers globally, many of whom are eager to collaborate with us. The global Watson IoT Center is working alongside us to drive innovation. Together, we aim to build a new global IoT innovation ecosystem that explores how cognitive technologies and IoT can transform industries and public life.â€
Fernando Alvarez, Senior Vice President of CapGemini Global Alliance, added, “We chose to combine CapGemini’s technology and business expertise with IBM’s team to deepen our relationship and accelerate digital transformation for our clients. Our employees and customers will gain full access to IBM’s technology, experts, and resources, significantly speeding up time-to-market.â€
In addition, IBM has announced partnerships with companies like Visa and Bosch, aiming to develop new solutions tailored for the payment and industrial sectors. These collaborations further solidify IBM’s position as a leader in the evolving IoT landscape.
