Although companies like LG, Sony, and Panasonic continue to invest in the OLED TV market, Samsung has remained absent from the OLED panel scene for years, instead focusing its efforts on the QLED (Quantum Dot Light Emitting Diode) technology. Let’s take a closer look at what’s happening in this evolving display technology landscape.
QLED technology replaces the organic materials used in OLEDs with inorganic quantum dots, offering improved durability and brightness. This makes it more suitable for high-end TVs that require long-term performance and stability.
However, recent reports suggest that Samsung may be reconsidering its stance. According to a recent update, Samsung Group Chairman Lee Jae-yong reportedly asked for a reassessment of OLED TV development after hearing a report from the company’s business division. This hints at a possible shift in strategy, though nothing official has been announced yet.
Despite these rumors, Han Jong-hee, head of Samsung’s TV and Display Division, recently stated in Seoul that the company does not have any plans to develop OLED TVs. In fact, he even said “Never†when asked about future involvement in the technology.
Jong-hee emphasized that Samsung will focus its resources on two main technologies: QLED and microLED. The company believes these options provide better long-term value and technological scalability compared to OLED.
Samsung has previously cited issues like burn-in and higher production costs as reasons for avoiding OLED. While OLED TVs offer superior contrast and deeper blacks, they are more prone to image retention, especially under static content. Additionally, manufacturing OLED panels at scale remains expensive, which is why many manufacturers, including Samsung, have opted for alternative solutions.
With the ongoing competition between QLED and OLED, it’s clear that the display technology landscape is constantly evolving. Whether Samsung will eventually return to OLED remains to be seen, but for now, the company is firmly committed to its current path.
