The AWE, the largest annual domestic appliance exhibition in China, is just a few days away. Over the past two years, home appliance manufacturers have increasingly focused on this event. In the past, most brands only showcased products that had previously been revealed at CES. However, now more and more new products are being launched directly at AWE. Brands that didn’t participate in CES are even more likely to surprise attendees this year.
Last year, Sharp introduced the first consumer-grade 8K TV, the LCD-70SX970A, which was 70 inches in size. This time, the large screen being displayed is expected to be even bigger than 70 inches. If it’s still intended for home use, it might not be the biggest. Considering the price, which is over 120,000 yuan, it's possible that Sharp will unveil an 8K TV with a 100 or 120-inch display. However, if the only change is the size, it may not be a major breakthrough, as other brands have already demonstrated similar-sized 8K TVs.
Beyond the size, what other surprises can we expect from this Super 8K display? Will it be a mass-produced product, or just a concept? Could it showcase Sharp’s latest advancements in 8K technology, or perhaps reveal a major breakthrough in 8K content?
Recently, Sharp and its parent company, Hon Hai, announced plans to acquire RED, an American film and video equipment company, in order to promote the popularization of 8K technology. Hon Hai’s chairman, Terry Gou, stated that preparations for the investment have been completed. Meanwhile, Sharp’s president, Dai Zhengwu, mentioned that details about the investment amount and the proportion of shares between Hon Hai and Sharp will be finalized soon. RED is known for producing high-end film and video equipment, reportedly used by Netflix for its original productions. With this partnership, Sharp aims to develop a product that reduces both size and price by one-third within a year.
While having the right equipment makes 8K content production easier, the challenge remains in transmitting large-scale 8K content. The development of 5G technology is key here, as it offers faster speeds, larger capacity, and almost no latency compared to 4G. Even in remote areas, 5G can enable real-time communication.
In terms of mass production, Sharp has the resources through its partnership with Hon Hai to produce and sell 8K TVs. It’s also possible that the Super 8K model could be mass-produced, given that Sharp is currently building two cutting-edge 10.5-generation factories. On February 11, Guo Ting-ming revealed that Hon Hai’s planned large-scale LCD panel factory in Wisconsin, USA, will start construction in April.
Overall, Sharp’s actions show that 8K is no longer just a hype—it’s a mature technology with solid production, sales, and application strategies. Lessons learned from the 4K adoption process have helped accelerate 8K’s development. As a result, 8K is set to become a major trend that will soon capture our attention.
