Although LG, Sony, and Panasonic continue to invest in the OLED TV market, Samsung has remained absent from the OLED panel space for years, instead focusing its efforts on the QLED (Quantum Dot Light Emitting Diode) technology. Let’s take a closer look at what’s happening in this evolving display technology landscape.
QLED technology replaces the organic materials used in OLEDs with inorganic quantum dots, offering improved durability and brightness. This makes it more suitable for long-term use and high-brightness environments, such as large-screen TVs or commercial displays.
However, there's a recent shift in the narrative. This week, it was reported that Lee Jae-yong, the chairman of Samsung Group, requested a reassessment of OLED TVs after receiving a report from the company’s business division. This signals a potential change in direction, although it remains unclear whether this will lead to any concrete action.
Despite this, Han Jong-hee, head of Samsung’s TV and Display Division, clarified during a press event in Seoul that the company has no current plans to develop OLED TVs. In fact, he emphatically stated “Never†when asked about future involvement in the OLED space.
He emphasized that Samsung will focus its resources on two key technologies: QLED and microLED. These are seen as more viable and sustainable options for the company’s long-term strategy.
According to previous statements from Samsung, the decision to avoid OLED was primarily driven by concerns over image retention (burn-in) and higher production costs. While OLED offers superior contrast and viewing angles, these technical challenges have made it less attractive for mass-market adoption.
As the display industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see whether Samsung’s recent interest in OLED leads to any meaningful changes in its product roadmap. For now, however, the company remains firmly committed to its QLED and microLED strategies.
