At present, the core equipment for home displays is still LCD TVs. According to the latest data from Quzhi Research, the 55-inch TV has dominated the domestic market, making up about 25% of the total sales in the fourth quarter of last year—the highest single-size share. However, in the second quarter of this year, the unit price of 55-inch TVs continued to rise, reaching around 4,800 RMB. As a result, the 55-inch segment's market share dropped to 23%, and demand fell significantly. In the second half of the year, as panel prices declined, 55-inch TVs became the key product driven by Chinese TV brands. The price dropped steadily, and demand increased rapidly.
From a current perspective, the entry size of LCD TVs has gradually moved beyond 50 inches. Looking ahead, consumers are showing stronger interest in larger display devices. However, when it comes to LCD TVs over 75 inches, the price increase becomes more pronounced. For example, a 100-inch LCD TV was once sold by Wang Sicong for nearly 50 million yuan, highlighting how expensive large-sized LCD TVs can be.
Why does the size increase of LCD TVs not match the price increase? This is because the production of LCD panels has its own constraints. Each production line is designed to cut specific panel sizes. To produce a 100-inch panel, the factory must upgrade its equipment, and the material waste is significant. For instance, one liquid crystal substrate can be cut into four or five 55-inch panels, but only one 100-inch panel can be made from the same piece.
In the short term, it’s unlikely that LCD TVs will drastically reduce the prices of large-sized models. For users who desire bigger screens, laser TVs offer an excellent alternative. Some people mistakenly believe that laser TVs are just projectors, but they are actually advanced devices that combine a reflective ultra-short-throw laser projector, a light curtain, smart system, and sound system. Laser TVs can easily achieve a 100-inch screen size and consume less power than 100-inch LCD TVs. They also offer easier installation and better color performance.
However, the biggest challenge for laser TVs is their price. Currently, mainstream 1080P laser TVs cost around 30,000 RMB, which is still out of reach for many consumers. But the price is gradually decreasing, and it is expected to drop below 20,000 RMB by 2018. If future laser TVs can be priced under 10,000 RMB, their popularity is likely to soar.
According to statistical data, people’s pursuit of large-screen devices has not slowed down. Although 50- to 55-inch LCD TVs meet basic needs, with China’s consumption upgrading at an accelerated pace, laser TVs still have plenty of opportunities to capture the market for oversized screens.
