Intel's focus on low-power chips will reduce power consumption to 15 watts According to foreign media reports, Intel released the third major change in its chip development strategy on Tuesday. This change is to actively reduce the power consumption of chips for smartphones and tablets, and optimize the future design of notebook computers.

Intel's recently designed mainstream microprocessor chips consume about 35 to 40 watts. Intel told analysts at the annual 2011 investor conference in Santa Clara, California on Tuesday that Intel will reduce the power consumption of mainstream microprocessors to about 15 watts in a few years, hoping to extend the portable device. This shift is expected to require modification of Intel's chip design methodology and advances in the use of chip production technology. Intel CEO Paul Otellini compared this change to the changes needed to develop Intel’s popular Pentium processor in the early 1990’s and Centrino’s design for laptops around 2005.

Otellini insisted that Intel's sales in the second quarter are still on a healthy track. Intel’s statistics show that PC sales have reached an annual growth rate of 10% to 14% in 2013. The main drivers of growth are customers in emerging markets such as China, Brazil and Eastern Europe. These markets are mainly small computer manufacturers, rather than large manufacturers such as Hewlett-Packard and Dell.
