Panasonic Low-key recall of a variety of arsenic exceeding standard water purifier

On May 30th, the Ministry of Public Health issued the “Notice on the Promulgation of Unqualified Products Related to Water and Sanitation”. During the sampling inspection of some imported small water purifiers, 11 products were found to be unqualified, among which 3M and Mitsubishi Some Panasonic products have detected excessive levels of arsenic. The Ministry of Health has instructed the local health administrative department to deal with unqualified products and relevant responsible units according to the problems found in random sampling.

Panasonic low-key recall, 3M suspended sales

On May 31, Panasonic began recalling water purifiers of model TK38MRF with production dates of January 29, 2009, March 16, 2009, and April 22, 2009. "Daily Economic News" reporter called Matsushita's after-sales department in the name of consumers. Insiders told the reporter that as long as the model is TK38MRF and the production date is the above-mentioned three kinds, the company will conduct repurchases. However, the user must provide the product warranty card and invoice, and the factory will refund the user according to the invoice amount.

At the same time, Xu Wei, head of the public relations department of Panasonic (China) Co., Ltd., said in an interview with the China Business News that “after we received this result, the company’s internal and third-party inspections have not been detected. If arsenic exceeds the standard, there is no place for arsenic in all parts of the water purifier, so it is impossible to know where this arsenic comes from."

3M company released "3M statement on the results of sampling inspection of China Water Quality Control Center water purifiers" on its official website for the first time, saying that the three water purifiers involved in this sampling inspection were from May to October last year in Zhejiang and Liaoning. Products sold on the market in Jiangsu and Jiangsu due to improper storage of some of the products in the batch during transportation and storage resulted in moisture in the package, which resulted in a decrease in the performance of some product filter elements and filter heads. However, the results of another test conducted by the same kind of other batch products sent to the China Center for Disease Control and Environmental and Health Product Safety show that the same products currently sold on the market do not have the above quality problems. 3M has notified the relevant distributors to stop selling the problematic products and if there is an immediate recall of the inventory. Consumers who have already purchased the batch of products can replace the new filter element free of charge on the invoice to the place of purchase.

Activated carbon filter or culprit

The quality of activated carbon filter has always been a major factor restricting the safety of domestic water purifiers. Hu Junming and other experts from the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention Center wrote that according to the hygiene inspection data of different types of household water purifiers from 2006 to 2009, the failure rate of each type of activated carbon filter was high. The rejection rate of granular activated carbon filter was 10.7%; the failure rate of sintered activated carbon filter was 25%; the failure rate of activated carbon fiber filter was 15.4%. Disqualifications include dissolving total solids, fluoride, turbidity, aluminum, and arsenic indicators.

As the activated carbon filter is the most commonly used water purification component for various types of domestic water purifiers, the production raw materials and processes often determine its quality. Therefore, activated carbon has become a key factor that restricts the hygiene and safety of the water purifier.

Data from Caixin.com shows that in Europe and the United States and other developed countries and regions, the water purifier family ownership rate exceeds 70%, compared to China's water purifier penetration rate is only about 2%, but the annual growth rate is as high as 30 % - 50%, in Beijing and other large cities is more than 100%. Gu Jiuchuan, secretary-general of the China Water Purification Industry Association, said that there are currently more than 1,000 water purifiers that hold relevant approvals from the Ministry of Health in China, but there are more than 2,000 undocumented enterprises in the form of workshops. In order to gain market share, the latter arbitrarily depressed the market price, leading to the flow of some quality products into the market.

As the activated carbon filter is the most commonly used water purification component for various types of domestic water purifiers, the production raw materials and processes often determine its quality. Therefore, activated carbon has become a key factor that restricts the hygiene and safety of the water purifier.

“The domestic water purifier industry is extremely unregulated in terms of competition, and most manufacturers are working on costs.” The person in charge of the United States told the reporter of the “First Financial Daily” that last year, the relevant national departments also issued a series of technical standards for water purifier products. But all are industry standards, non-mandatory standards. Due to the lack of supervision, the water purifier industry standards are virtually nullified and market competition is out of control.
