Siemens President Luo Xude: How to deal with energy challenges?

In 2009 , the first Colombo Future Forum was held in Berlin. The dialogue focused on how to promote cooperation between the scientific, business, and political circles to overcome the great challenges facing humanity, including climate change, health care, and urbanization. At the time of the 2010 Common Road Future Forum, Luo Xude, president and CEO of Siemens AG, Germany, accepted an exclusive interview with Sohu Finance.

Sohu Finance: In 2010 , China became the host country of the Alliance for the Future Forum. Can you brief us on the Commonwealth Future Forum and why it is held in China ?

Luo Xude: The “ Common Future ” forum is an international conference attended by top experts and policy makers from academia, business, and government. 2009 • Max Planck Society in Berlin and Siemens successfully held the first session of the Forum for the Future co-channel: the world's top scientists, business leaders, policy-makers and influential thinkers to come together, share their views, discuss academic How do companies, businesses, and government departments strengthen cooperation to address the problems caused by the accelerated process of climate change, demographic changes, and urbanization? We conducted a lively and fruitful discussion. We hope that the second session of the Gongdao Future Forum held in China can continue this success. In the area of energy supply and demand, China is a pivotal country, and energy supply and demand is an important issue in this forum. It is precisely for this reason that China has become an ideal host country for the Colombo Future Forum this year.

Sohu Finance: What kind of practical results do you hope to hold in the United Way Future Forum in China ?

Luo Xude: This year's conference aims to find new ways to solve the energy problems we face today, tomorrow and in the future - that is, as pioneers, how can we solve the ever-increasing energy demand while protecting the earth's resources. Focusing on energy production and energy efficiency, we will study the current best practices and discuss what the future technologies and research will bring us, especially what can be brought to China and Other fast-growing cities in emerging markets. We will also discuss how to convert basic research results into actionable plans for the future.

Sohu Finance: Does this mean that the current " Together Road to the Future " forum is limited to the discussion of ideas and topical arguments, and there are no specific actions and improvements ?

Luo Xude: I think the first step in our actions should be to have an in-depth understanding of global interdependence and global changes. Government officials, scientists, and technology suppliers must have a holistic awareness and understanding of different perspectives in order to properly respond to future energy challenges. For Siemens, this forum is an excellent platform for displaying future technological trends. We hope that through cooperation with government departments and academia, we can jointly cope with the enormous challenges in the future energy field. Our topics include environmental protection power generation, high-efficiency power transmission and distribution, smart grid technology, and electric vehicles. These are all real and innovative innovations for humanity.

Sohu Finance: Energy supply is a huge challenge for the world - especially China. Experts predict that China’s energy demand will more than double by 2030 . How can we solve this problem in a sustainable way ?

Luo Xude: By investing in clean technologies, China has begun to adopt sustainable ways to manage energy demand. The Chinese government has formulated a clear plan - by 2020 , China will increase the proportion of renewable energy use from the current 9% to 15% . At the same time, China will also invest heavily in building energy-efficient thermal power plants. For example, Siemens participated in the construction of the most efficient Shanghai Waigaoqiao Power Plant in the world. The coal consumption of the plant is 1 million tons less than that of an ordinary power plant. Built Waigaoqiao Power Plant makes China become the vanguard of the world's energy-efficient power plants, however, investment in green energy is not a new trend in China: As early as 1910, China will build the first hydropower station - Siemens power generation of the plant installed! machine. This shows that Siemens began to contribute to the development of China's renewable energy industry very early. We will continue to use our innovative technologies to contribute to China's future sustainable energy supply !

Sohu Finance: Prior to this, Siemens signed a memorandum of understanding with the Guangzhou Institute of Energy Resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to jointly carry out the “ Sustainable Development Research of Guangzhou City ” . The project is based on Siemens' research on urban sustainability in London, Munich and other major cities around the world, as well as on the Green City Index in Europe and Asia. This is Siemens' first sustainable development study for the entire city in China. What is the latest trend of technological development in the field of new energy ?

Luo Xude: I will give you two examples . First, in China: We participated in building the world's longest and most efficient HVDC transmission line, which is what we call HVDC . The HVDC line has a total length of 1400 kilometers and can provide 5 million households in China with green energy from hydropower stations. In addition, this line will allow power delivery to be accomplished with minimal loss: transmission losses can be as low as 3% . Of particular interest to the project is the fact that the transformers used in this project are half manufactured in Germany and the other half are made in China – this is a model of Sino-German technical cooperation. The second example is electric vehicles, which is a major trend in recent years and in the coming decades. At present, there are 1 billion vehicles in the world. These cars emit about one- fifth of the world's total carbon dioxide emissions. However, electric vehicles are twice as efficient as diesel locomotives. Another great advantage of electric vehicles is that they can use a variety of fuel and renewable resources to generate electricity, thereby reducing human dependence on oil. In addition, electric vehicles can also be used as mobile energy storage devices, which charge at night and then feed back this energy to the power grid during peak periods. Siemens is also at the forefront of the world in this field of technological innovation.

Sohu Finance: In your opinion, what is the importance of China in the field of technological innovation ?

Luo Xude: China already has a strong technical strength. Since the mid-1990s, China's R & D investment has increased fourfold, and achieved remarkable results. China has not only achieved rapid economic growth, but also began to catch up with Europe in areas such as the number of patent applications. R&D investment and excellent R&D talent are two prerequisites for a successful technological innovation. Another factor is creativity. If we compare R&D as an engine that promotes sustainable development, then creativity is the engine that fuels the engine. At present, China is the country with the largest number of engineering professionals in the world. This has had a profound impact on the development of the Chinese national economy, the improvement of people’s living standards, and China’s position in the global scientific and technological community.

Innovation is not a tree without roots. Not only does it require funding and national policies, it also requires research in laboratories ( such as Siemens' laboratories ) , universities, research institutes, companies and schools around the world. What is particularly important is that we need to recognize the important role of these interactions in enhancing our innovative strengths, and we also need to take the necessary measures to enhance our innovative strength. The Gongdao Future Forum has not only become a good example of improving innovation, it has also become a model of Siemens' new and open innovation strategy.
