The 5965A/MAX5965B are quad-, single-chip, -48V power controllers designed for IEEE® 802.3af standard/pre-IEEE 802.3at compatible power supply equipment (PSE). Both devices provide power device (PD) detection, grading, current limiting, and DC and AC load disconnect detection to meet IEEE 802.3af standards. The MAX5965A/MAX5965B are pin-for-pin compatible with the MAX5952/MAX5945/LTC4258/LTC4259A and offer additional features.

The MAX5965A/MAX5965B support high-power modes that deliver up to 45W per port. The MAX5965A/MAX5965B offer new Class 5 and Class 2 classifications (Class 6) for high-power PD detection and classification. The MAX5965A/MAX5965B read the current at each port at any time via the I?C interface. The MAX5965A/MAX5965B provide large-capacity detection for early PDs.

These devices feature an I?C compatible 3-wire serial interface that is fully software configurable and programmable. The hierarchical overcurrent detection enables the system power management to detect whether the sink current of the PD exceeds the allowable current value. The MAX5965A/MAX5965B's comprehensive programmability enhances system flexibility and provides on-site diagnostics for other systems.

The MAX5965A/MAX5965B offer four modes of operation to suit different system requirements. Auto mode allows the device to operate automatically without any software monitoring. Semi-automatic mode automatically detects and ranks devices connected to the port after software initialization, but the port does not power up until the software issues an instruction. The device is fully controlled by software in manual mode, making it ideal for system diagnostics. All operations are terminated in shutdown mode and the power applied to the port is safely shut down.

The MAX5965A/MAX5965B provide input undervoltage lockout (UVLO), input undervoltage detection, load-safe safety detection during detection, input overvoltage lockout, overtemperature detection, slew rate limiting of output voltage during startup, power-good, and fault indication. . Programmable features of the MAX5965A/MAX5965B include: startup timeout, overcurrent timeout, and load disconnect detection timeout.

The MAX5965A/MAX5965B are available in a 36-pin SSOP package and are specified over the extended industrial (-40°C to +85°C) and extended commercial (0°C to +85°C) temperature ranges.
