Continental Group adopts Infineon’s security chip for its new generation of digital tachometers

On September 10, 2012, the Continental Group's new-generation digital tachometer VDO DTCO designated Infineon Technologies' security chips. Based on Infineon’s security chips, Continental Group can efficiently meet the EU’s high safety standards for these systems in 2009. Infineon is responsible for providing the Continental Group with a safety controller certified by the "Common Criteria EAL5+high" standard, which ensures reliable verification of the digital tachometer.

Dr. Lutz Scholten, head of the automotive tachometer and telematics system and service division of the Continental Group, stated: “We chose Infineon because Infineon has deep expertise and richness in hardware security and automotive electronics. experience of."

Dr. Stefan Hofschen, President of the chip card and safety division of Infineon Technologies AG, stated: “We are very pleased that Continental Group has given enough confidence in our safety solutions. The new generation of digital tachometers is further proofed by the use of our safety controllers. The security expertise in the industry will not only meet the needs of various chip card applications, but will also be increasingly applied to other security systems, especially in the automotive industry with a wide range of application prospects."

Since May 2006, the European Union has stipulated that all newly registered trucks exceeding 3.5 tons and buses or coaches with more than 8 seats must be equipped with a digital tachometer. Since October 2012, according to EU regulations, trucks and coaches can only be equipped with the latest generation of safety devices that are not easily tampered with and that are unlikely to fail. The European Union has also introduced electronic "black boxes" to improve road safety by effectively monitoring travel time.

The average annual number of new truck registrations in the EU is about 500,000. Each car must be equipped with a fixed digital tachometer. This electronic tachometer mainly records the total travel of the vehicle, the speed of the road surface and the engine speed, and the driver's driving and rest periods. All these driving data need to be kept for at least one year.

Infineon's safety controllers for this application are tested by T-Systems, an internationally recognized test and certification company. The German Federal Information Security Office (BSI) confirmed that it has a high degree of security and meets the "Common Criteria" standard, the internationally recognized standard for the rigorous assessment and certification of security chips.

Based on its core strengths in areas such as security, contactless communications and integrated microcontroller solutions (embedded control), Infineon has successfully launched a package of semiconductor-based security products for a variety of chip cards and security applications. Infineon leverages this expertise to continuously improve the security of mobile and networked worlds such as mobile payments, system security and reliable electronic identity documents. For 25 years, Infineon has continuously introduced hardware-based innovative security solutions and maintained its position as the No. 1 supplier for 15 consecutive years.
