Sony Mobile headquarters moved to Tokyo and cut 1,000 jobs

On August 23, Sony Mobile announced that it plans to move its headquarters from Lund, Sweden to Tokyo, Japan in October 2012. In line with this headquarters migration, Sony Mobile will cut 1,000 jobs globally, which accounts for 15% of its global workforce. The layoffs are expected to end at the end of March 2014.

Earlier this year, Sony acquired Ericsson's stake in the joint venture and completely controlled Sony Ericsson and renamed it Sony Mobile. Sony Mobile’s layoffs have been affected by Sony’s “10,000 job cuts” program. In April, as part of Sony's "One Sony" strategy, Sony announced that it would lay off 10,000 jobs, or about 6% of its global workforce.

Sony Mobile said in a statement on the 24th that the company hopes that the layoffs will "improve operational efficiency" and hopes to "reduce costs and promote profit growth."
