Ultra-sensitive pulse sensor for diagnosis of cardiovascular disease

Cardiovascular disease remains one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. Early detection and continuous monitoring play a crucial role in preventing severe outcomes. Recently, a team led by Li Zhou from the Beijing Institute of Nano Energy and Systems, Chinese Academy of Sciences, along with Wang Zhonglin, a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, collaborated with medical experts from Beijing Anzhen Hospital and Chaoyang Hospital to develop an innovative self-powered pulse sensor capable of Bluetooth transmission without the need for signal amplification. This breakthrough device is designed to convert pulse vibrations directly into electrical signals, generating up to 1.52 volts. Compared to traditional optical pulse sensors, it offers a signal-to-noise ratio that is ten times higher and costs only one-fifth as much. By integrating the sensor with a Bluetooth module, the system enables wireless data transmission, allowing real-time pulse monitoring through smartphones or computers. In a clinical trial, the system was tested on both healthy individuals and patients with various heart conditions. It successfully identified arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation and distinguished between coronary heart disease and atrial septal defects. This marks a significant step forward in non-invasive, portable cardiovascular diagnostics. The research, published in *Advanced Materials*, represents the first successful application of triboelectric nanogenerator-based self-driven sensing technology in cardiovascular disease diagnosis. It opens new possibilities for mobile and intelligent healthcare systems, offering a cost-effective, accurate, and user-friendly solution for long-term health monitoring. This innovation could revolutionize how we approach early detection and management of heart-related conditions, making advanced diagnostics more accessible and efficient for patients around the world.
