Radiant Vision Systems Announces New AR/VR Lenses for Measuring Near-Eye Displays in Headset Devices

On February 1, 2018, Radiant Vision Systems, a leading provider of visual test and inspection systems for lighting and display devices, introduced a new AR/VR lens designed specifically for their ProMetric imaging luminance and colorimeter. This innovative lens is tailored for measuring the visual quality of near-eye displays (NEDs) found in virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), and augmented reality (AR) headsets. The optical design mimics the human eye's size, position, and field of view, with an aperture placed at the front to align the entrance pupil of the NED headset with that of the human eye. The lens allows for precise measurements by replicating how the human eye interacts with the display, ensuring accurate assessments of image quality from a user’s perspective. According to Doug Kreysar, Chief Solution Officer at Radiant Vision Systems, traditional brightness measurement devices are not optimized for NEDs. These systems typically position the aperture deep within the lens housing, limiting the camera’s ability to capture the full field of view without obstruction from the headset hardware. In contrast, Radiant’s AR/VR lenses place the entrance pupil directly on the eyepiece, enabling measurements across a wide 120° field of view—ideal for advanced VR devices. By attaching the AR/VR lens to a ProMetric imaging luminance meter or colorimeter, Radiant offers the industry’s first solution for evaluating near-eye microdisplays in head-mounted devices. This includes LED-based, LCD, OLED, and projection display technologies. Their TrueTest™ software provides comprehensive testing suites, allowing users to run multiple tests on a single captured image, quickly assessing brightness, color, contrast, uniformity, Mura, pixel defects, and more. Specialized AR/VR tests include beveled contrast, image distortion, ghosting, and positional accuracy, ensuring thorough evaluation of immersive display experiences. The AR/VR lens is an optional accessory for Radiant’s ProMetric Y and I models, offering a compact, efficient solution for NED measurement. It minimizes setup time and integration challenges, while still allowing users to switch back to standard lenses for other display applications like production line testing. With thousands of deployed solutions worldwide, Radiant has built a strong reputation for delivering reliable, end-to-end measurement systems tailored to unique display design and quality control needs.
