Allegro MicroSystems, LLC has released the new 40 V motor driver IC A5989, which is capable of driving a stepper motor and a DC motor. The stepper drive has a rated output current of up to 1.6A and a DC driver of 3.2A. Allegro's A5989 device integrates a fixed off-time pulse width modulation (PWM) current regulator and a 2-bit nonlinear digital-to-analog converter (DAC) that allows step control in full, half, and quarter steps Enter the motor. The new device targets the consumer electronics, industrial and office automation markets, including point-of-sale, lottery, ticketing, laser, inkjet and label printers, copiers, vending machines and ATMs.
The A5989 stepper driver PWM current regulator uses Allegro's patented mixed-decay mode to reduce audible noise, improve step accuracy, and reduce power consumption. This DC motor drive is capable of fast or slow PWM attenuation control, operating in forward, reverse, slide and brake modes.
Protection features of the A5989 include thermal shutdown with hysteresis, undervoltage lockout (UVLO), crossover current, and overcurrent protection. The A5989 also features a low current sleep mode to increase efficiency.
The A5989 is available in leadless 6mm &TImes; 6mm & TImes; 0.9mm, 36-pin QFN packages with exposed power tabs for enhanced thermal performance. The A5989 is available in a lead-free package with 100% matte tin leadframe plating.
