**0 Preface**
With the widespread use of smartphones and smart TVs, it's becoming increasingly common to use a smartphone's Wi-Fi capabilities for remote control. In China, where most urban residents own a smartphone, these devices are always with them, while TV remotes are often left behind. This can be inconvenient when you want to turn on the TV or switch channels. By using a smartphone as a remote control, this issue is eliminated. The goal of this project is to develop a system that allows a smartphone to control a traditional TV via Wi-Fi, making the process more convenient and user-friendly.
**1 Hardware Circuit Design**
Although both smartphones and modern TVs come with Wi-Fi capabilities, most TVs cannot directly connect to Wi-Fi networks due to their lack of support for Wi-Fi-based applications. However, smartphones can run such apps. To bridge this gap, we need a way for the TV to receive and interpret Wi-Fi signals from the phone. One effective solution is to use the existing infrared (IR) remote control circuit in the TV.
By replacing the IR receiver with a Wi-Fi-to-IR signal converter, we can enable the TV to respond to commands sent via Wi-Fi. This approach preserves the original IR interface, ensuring compatibility with existing TV models. For example, the Hisense LED55K560X3D TV uses an IR interface with specific pin definitions. These include the IR signal input, ground (GND), standby/power-on signal (STANDBY), and a 5V power supply.
To implement the Wi-Fi control, we designed a circuit based on the OCA4004 chip from Qualcomm. This chip supports IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n protocols and includes an embedded CPU, allowing it to process Wi-Fi signals without requiring additional microcontrollers or memory. The original IR interface remains intact, but the IR receiver is replaced with a Wi-Fi transceiver. A resistor is added to the STANDBY line to allow the system to detect the TV’s power state. The Wi-Fi signal is then converted into an IR remote control code and sent to the TV’s main board through a transistor, enabling full Wi-Fi-based remote control.
This design not only simplifies the hardware setup but also ensures compatibility with existing TV models, making it a practical and cost-effective solution for smart home integration.
