Qualcomm Technologies Announces First Comprehensive Solution from Modem to Antenna

Barcelona, February 26, 2018 – Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), through its subsidiary Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., has announced that Sony Mobile’s new Xperia XZ2 smartphone is powered by a full Qualcomm® RF Front End (RFFE) solution, including the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 845 mobile platform with integrated X20 Gigabit LTE and support for 4K HDR video recording. This marks a major milestone as Qualcomm becomes the first in the semiconductor industry to deliver a complete modem-to-antenna solution for high-end smartphones. By leveraging this comprehensive system, Sony Mobile benefits from enhanced connectivity, power efficiency, and overall performance. The integration of Qualcomm’s full RFFE kit enables system-level optimization, ensuring a seamless global experience for users across different network environments. The Qualcomm RF front-end solutions are designed to simplify the complexities of radio design in modern smartphones. By combining intelligent computing with highly integrated modules, these solutions allow OEMs to achieve superior RF performance while maintaining low power consumption, essential for handling high data rates in real-world networks. The modem-to-antenna solution includes key components such as Power Amplifier Modules (PAMiD) with duplexer, Envelope Trackers (ET), advanced antenna tuners, and diversity receiver modules. These components work together to enhance signal strength, reduce interference, and improve battery life. For example, the QPM2621, QPM2632, and QPM2643 PAMiD modules support global frequency bands, integrating PAs, filters, and switches into compact designs. The QET4100 Envelope Tracker optimizes power usage by dynamically adjusting voltage, while the QAT3550 Antenna Tuner improves signal reliability by adapting to environmental changes like hand occlusion or metal back covers. These technologies are compatible with the X20 LTE modem and the Snapdragon 845 platform, enabling ultra-fast data speeds and advanced features like 4x4 MIMO and carrier aggregation. Christian Block, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Qualcomm’s RF Front End business unit, emphasized the importance of these solutions as the industry transitions to 5G. He noted that partnerships like the one with Sony Mobile help OEMs meet the growing demand for high-quality user experiences while managing the challenges of global network diversity. Izumi Kawanishi, Director and Executive Vice President of Product Operations at Sony Mobile, praised the collaboration, highlighting how Qualcomm’s integrated RF front-end technology allows them to deliver top-tier mobile experiences. With the support of Qualcomm’s solutions, Sony can ensure consistent performance across all regions and network conditions. As mobile networks grow more complex, the need for advanced RF front-end systems becomes even more critical. Qualcomm’s complete modem-to-antenna solution not only enhances connection reliability and speed but also ensures excellent coverage, global roaming, and longer battery life—key factors for the future of 5G and beyond.
