On February 1, 2018, Radiant Vision Systems, a leader in visual test and inspection systems for lighting and display technologies, introduced a new AR/VR lens designed specifically for their ProMetric imaging luminance and colorimeter. This innovative lens is tailored for evaluating the visual quality of near-eye displays (NEDs) used in virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), and augmented reality (AR) headsets. The optical design mimics the human eye’s size, position, and field of view, with an aperture strategically placed to align with the entrance pupil of the NED headset. This ensures accurate and realistic measurements from the user's perspective.
The company’s Chief Solution Officer, Doug Kreysar, emphasized the importance of simulating the human eye’s position and distance from the display when assessing NED quality. He noted that traditional brightness measurement devices are not optimized for NEDs, as they often place the aperture deep within the lens housing, limiting the camera’s ability to capture the full field of view without obstruction. Radiant’s AR/VR lenses solve this issue by positioning the entrance pupil directly at the eyepiece, allowing for a wide 120° field of view ideal for advanced VR applications.
By attaching the AR/VR lens to the ProMetric imaging luminance meter or colorimeter, Radiant offers the first industry solution for measuring microdisplays in head-mounted devices, supporting various display technologies such as LED, LCD, OLED, and projection. Their TrueTestâ„¢ software provides comprehensive testing capabilities, including brightness, color, contrast, uniformity, and defect detection. Specialized AR/VR tests include beveled contrast, image distortion, ghosting, and positional accuracy, enabling quick and thorough evaluation of display performance.
The AR/VR lens is an optional accessory for Radiant’s high-resolution ProMetric Y and I models. It simplifies NED measurement with a compact, easy-to-integrate solution, reducing setup time and technical requirements. Users can quickly switch between the AR/VR lens and standard optics for different testing scenarios, whether inside or outside the headset. With thousands of deployed solutions worldwide, Radiant continues to lead in providing reliable, end-to-end measurement systems for diverse display applications.
