Want to get your hands on the HTC U Ultra? I've had it for over the New Year, and it was launched in early 2017 at a price that was once considered flagship-level. The official price of the 4G+64G model was 5,088 yuan, but during Double 11, it dropped to 1,900 yuan on JD.com. In less than a year, its value fell by 63%. No wonder people are talking about it so much. This depreciation rate is almost free-fall, but now the price has hit a bottom and offers good value. It shows that even though it's not the latest, the 821+4G+64G configuration still holds up well in the 2,000-yuan range. This article isn’t meant to compare specs or give a full review; it's just a personal reflection on this non-mainstream product and my experience with buying and using it.

Reasons to Purchase:

Initially, I was looking for a replacement for my iPhone 6 Plus because the battery wasn’t holding up. At that time, the battery door hadn't exploded yet. I preferred a phone under 5 inches, with dual SIM, full network support, microSD slot, NFC, decent camera and audio, and a price around 1,500 yuan. I first considered the Meizu Pro 6s, but when the Pro 7 came out during Double 11, the price dropped significantly. Even with some issues, I nearly bought it. However, the camera was too heavy, and the sound quality wasn’t great, so I eventually gave it up.

The success of the HTC U Ultra lies in its balance. When I set my budget to around 2,000 yuan, it became my top choice. Even though it has a nearly 6-inch screen, it met most of my requirements. I purchased it from JD.com, and the package included several accessories. I originally wanted the blue color, which was the flagship version, but it felt a bit too flashy. I prefer the frame color over the back glass design, which still feels a bit unpredictable.

Appearance Gallery:

As a flagship device, the HTC U Ultra comes with a premium feel from the packaging to the accessories. It includes a soft case, a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter, a screen protector, and even the Usonic headphones, which are reminiscent of Apple’s minimalist style. The delivery method is quite popular, and there are small design details that show attention to service. The Gold Grand Card is also included as part of the offering.

Experience Feelings:

For me, this phone isn’t used for gaming, but it serves as a backup. My usage isn’t high, but I noticed it drains faster than my three-year-old iPhone 6 Plus. I think it's because Apple devices tend to stay in standby mode, while Android phones often run background processes. Many apps ask for unnecessary permissions like accessing contacts or SMS, and updates happen in the background. This makes me worry about data privacy. I still prefer Apple, even though iCloud is now based in Guizhou.

Comparing the official version with the downgraded one isn’t very helpful. The Taiwan version has more detailed specs, including 720P slow motion at 120fps and up to 16 seconds of exposure time. These are features that reflect the camera quality. I’ve also compared it with the BNM version, but it's hard to say which is better.

Regarding the main camera of the U Ultra, I couldn’t find an authoritative review, but there are evaluations for the U11, which scored pretty well. From a technical standpoint, the U11 has a larger aperture (f/1.7) compared to the U Ultra (f/1.8), and supports 1080P 120fps slow motion with up to 32 seconds of exposure. According to HTC’s own enthusiasm, the U11 is superior to the U Ultra. If we look at DxO scores, the U Ultra might score around 85. As for the Usonic headphones, since they're not widely used, there aren't many convincing reviews. However, their Type-C interface allows them to be powered directly, solving the power issue for noise-canceling headphones. I find it very convenient and satisfying.

In summary:

The HTC U Ultra is a unique product that aimed to change HTC’s direction in recent years. It features a dual-screen, Usonic headset, good camera, double-glazed body, and 3D sound effects. However, it also seems like a rushed release. Launched in early 2017, other manufacturers had already released their flagships, and HTC didn’t have a strong presence. This led to a sharp drop in price, and it missed out on some features like IP ratings, wireless charging, and others that were added in later models.

The mobile phone market is tough. Companies like Nokia and HTC were once industry leaders, but now they’re just memories. I’m satisfied with my choice. It's been ten years since I first got a smartphone, the Dopod 575. Now, I'm still here, enjoying the journey.
