Want to write about the HTC U ULTRA? I've had it for over a year now. Launched in early 2017, it was once the flagship of HTC, with an official price of 5,088 yuan for the 4G+64G version. During Double 11, the price dropped to just 1,900 yuan. In less than a year, it lost 63% of its value. No wonder some fans are upset. This depreciation is pretty fast, but now it's at a reasonable price. It shows that the basic specs—like the 821+4G+64G—are still competitive in the 2000 yuan range. This article isn’t meant to compare specs or give shopping advice, but rather to reflect on the unusual popularity of this non-mainstream product in the market and share my own experiences with buying and using it.

Reasons to Purchase

Initially, I was looking for a replacement for my iPhone 6 Plus, as the battery had started dying quickly. At the time, the battery door hadn't exploded yet. I preferred a phone under 5 inches, with dual SIM, full network support, memory card slot, NFC, decent camera and audio, and a price around 1,500 yuan. I considered the Meizu Pro6s, but during Double 11, the Pro7 model dropped in price, and even though the core was similar, the sound quality wasn't great, so I eventually gave up.

The success of the HTC U ULTRA lies in its balance. When I set my budget to around 2,000 yuan, it became my top choice. Although it has a nearly 6-inch screen, it met most of my needs. I bought it from JD.com, and they sent a bunch of extra items. I originally wanted the blue version, which was the flagship color, but it felt too flashy. I prefer the frame color over the back glass one—it’s just not as appealing to me.

As a flagship device, the HTC U ULTRA comes in a premium package with all the extras. It includes a soft case, a Type-C to 3.5mm adapter, a screen protector, and even the USonic headset, which reminds me of Apple's minimalist design. The delivery style is quite popular, and there are small details that show thoughtfulness, like the Gold Grand Card.

Experience Feelings

For me, this phone isn't for gaming, but it works well as a backup. My usage isn't high, but it drains faster than my three-year-old iPhone 6 Plus. I don't know why, but when I'm not using it, it still loses power. Android's openness can be both a blessing and a curse. Many apps request unnecessary permissions, and background updates can drain the battery. As personal data becomes valuable, I think I'll stick with Apple, even though iCloud is now based in Guizhou.

Comparing the official and BNM versions is a bit boring. The Taiwan version provides more detailed specs, such as 720P at 120fps slow motion and up to 16 seconds of exposure. These features show the camera's quality, and they’re worth comparing.

Regarding the main camera quality of the U ULTRA, I couldn’t find any authoritative reviews, but there are evaluations for the U11. The U11 scores pretty well. From a technical standpoint, the U11 has a larger aperture (f/1.7) compared to the U ULTRA (f/1.8), and it supports 120fps at 1080p, with up to 32 seconds of exposure. According to HTC's official site, the U11 is generally better than the U ULTRA. If we consider DxOMark scores, the U ULTRA might score around 85. As for the USonic headphones, I haven’t used them much, but the Type-C interface allows for charging, which solves the power issue for noise-canceling headphones. I’m quite satisfied with their compact design and performance!

Mobile phone shooting list

In conclusion: The HTC U ULTRA is a distinctive device that aimed to change HTC's direction in recent years. It features a dual-screen, USonic headset, good camera, double-glass body, and 3D audio effects. However, it also seemed rushed, released in early 2017 when other manufacturers had already launched their flagships. HTC was out of sync, leading to a sharp drop in price. Some mainstream features like IP ratings, wireless charging, and others were missing, even though they were introduced in later models.

The smartphone market is tough. Companies like Nokia and HTC once led the trend, but now they're just memories. I’m happy with my choice. From my first smartphone, the Dopod 575, to now, it's been ten years. This phone has been a solid companion through the years. I feel it's worth every penny I spent.
