Google pushes Google Assistant's "smart display". What does this mean?

[NetEase smart news January 10 news] In order to avoid doubting whether Google really want to promote artificial intelligence technology to every corner of consumer electronics, think about today's CES 2018 show: Google has just announced four models from Lenovo, JBL, LG and Sony's new "smart displays", as well as smart speakers and televisions from other partners, are difficult to sum up. All these devices are equipped with Google Assistant. Amazon's Alexa digital assistants also appear on more and more third-party devices.

Google also announced that Google Assistant will access the Android Auto Dashboard Unit and will provide you with an official name for all voice commands and inquiries for Google Assistant - "Actions." However, the news focuses on smart displays that cannot be implemented in Google’s own Google homepage, Google Home mini, or Google Home Max smart speakers.

Google Assistant-supported smart monitor

These smart monitors mainly refer to high-definition tablet PCs supported by Google Assistant. They can be placed on the table or the kitchen table, just like a beautiful digital photo frame (think of our favorite Amazon Echo Show), but they use Google Assistant instead of Alexa. . The new smart displays range in size from 8 inches to 10 inches, with front-facing cameras and built-in speakers, with uneven quality. However, the protagonist of the electronic show is Google Assistant.

On the desktop interface, Google Assistant's behavior is very similar to that of smart speakers, but it adds rich visual effects. For example, when you ask the Assistant to share the content on your calendar, you will see the card for each appointment, and from there, you can ask the smart display to display your destination map.

You can also ask the Assistant for recipes. Hey, they will appear on the smart display in a convenient way. In addition, since the display has a voice-driven interface, you do not need to touch the screen with your fingers.

The smart display can also display images from Google Photos; provide a display interface for security cameras and other smart home devices; and use it as a face-to-face chat video phone that supports Google Duo.

Google's first smart monitor should be launched this summer. The JBL Link View will be equipped with an 8-inch high-definition display, a 5 megapixel front camera, two front speakers, and a rear-mounted passive heat sink.

At the same time, Lenovo released two smart displays: a $200 model with a 1280x800 resolution 8-inch screen, and a $250 model with a 1920x1200 10-inch screen. Each model is equipped with a full-range speaker, a 5 megapixel camera that can be rotated from landscape to portrait, with two color schemes (soft grey or natural bamboo). If you have privacy concerns, you can also turn off the camera.

It is reported that Lenovo smart displays will be shipped in July. The JBL monitor will be released in summer. At present, we have not obtained relevant information from Sony and LG's auxiliary smart displays.

Smart speaker and smart TV powered by Google Assistant

Google also announced that the company is working with numerous partners to apply Google Assistant to smart speakers. These companies include Anker Innovations, Bang & Olufsen, Braven, iHome, JBL, Jensen, LG, Klipsch, Knit Audio, Memorex, RIVA Audio and others. This is a huge lineup. We must assume that some smart speakers will have better sound quality than Google's own branded devices.

In terms of television, Google's assistants will access a number of existing Android TV products such as AirTV, TCL, Skyworth and Xiaomi, and will be integrated into new Android TV products such as Changhong, Element, Funai, Haier, Hisense and Westinghouse. What's even cool is that LG is integrating Google Assistant directly into full-size 4K OLED and Ultra HD LCD TVs.

Google Assistant will also support Android Auto, which will implant Google’s unique artificial intelligence brand in the dashboard of more than 40 manufacturers’ vehicles. The result of this is that locating, finding a gas station, sending and replying to information, and getting details about your schedule should all be easier than ever (but, frankly, your awareness as a driver may be influences).

Finally, in its blog post, Google shares the real name of all the commands and queries it has trained for Google Assistant. These voice prompts are now called "Actions," Google said, with more than one million Actions related to services from Google and third-party partners. Even better: Google has a new Actions directory to help you get more service features from Google's assistant devices.

So what does this all mean?

First of all, this means that Google will do its utmost to make "universal language" for consumer electronic devices - that is, the same with Amazon's goal for Alexa. Voice control is the future, and Google wants to own it.

Second, all these devices are relatively platform neutral, so they are not open Android devices. This will help spread the charm of Google services to iPhone users.

Third, artificial intelligence has become more intelligent in machine learning. Therefore, as more and more people use Google Assistant, AI will develop better and better. This benefit far exceeds retail sales revenue on smart displays and speakers.
