Market consulting company Sensor Tower pointed out in the report that the number of VR apps downloaded through the App Store and Google Play in 2016 reached 226 million, an increase of 276% year-on-year.
In the first few months of 2017, the download volume of VR App on the two platforms continued to increase, showing no sign of slowing down. In the first quarter, the total number of downloads for the App Store and Google Play VR App exceeded 85 million, an increase of 205% over the same period last year. From January 2015 to March 2017, there were 371 million downloads of global VR apps, of which the App Store accounted for 106 million, and Google Play accounted for 265 million.

Throughout 2016, VR App’s quarterly downloads continued to grow, reaching a total of 108.5 million downloads for the two platforms in the fourth quarter of 2016, an increase of 411% year-on-year.
The download volume of mobile VR apps increased significantly in December last year, mainly because Google launched Daydream helmets for Android devices in November. Randy Nelson, director of mobile analytics at Sensor Tower, pointed out that the download volume of Apple's platform has increased significantly, and Apple has not launched first-party VR devices for the iPhone itself, nor has it actively marketed VR.
The report shows that from 2015 to 2017, games accounted for the largest share of VR App downloads, accounting for 56% of the total installed capacity. The Entertainment App came in second place with a 17% share, followed by photos, videos, utilities, and travel apps.
