Boosting motor development, Texas Instruments pushes three-phase brushless DC motor driver

According to the news, a few days ago, Texas Instruments (TI) announced the launch of two three-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motor drivers to help designers start the motor in minutes, not months. Traditional BLDC motor design requires 5 to 10 components and firmware. Sensorless 5 V 680 mA DRV10866 and 12 V 1.5 A DRV11873 can help customers accelerate the time to market while reducing the number of components to one, without firmware, significantly reducing board space and reducing system costs. In addition, these two devices also support the lowest operating voltage and standby current, reducing power consumption by up to 75%.

The main features and advantages of DRV10866 and DRV11873

• Highly integrated: a single motor driver eliminates the need for external gate drivers, inverters, position detection and feedback, and microcontrollers (MCUs) and firmware, reducing board space, reducing system cost and development time;

• Start the motor in a few minutes: Use the TI InstaSPIN-FAN Motor Solution ™, a comprehensive and robust protection solution that does not require coding, and only a few external components are needed to start the motor;

• Reduce power consumption by up to 75%: compared to existing solutions, a wide operating voltage of 1.65 V to 5.5 V and a low quiescent current of 5 uA can extend the battery life of portable devices such as toothbrushes and razors;

• High flexibility to add advanced control functions: For designs that require user interface and closed-loop speed control, it can be combined with TI MSP430 ™ MCU;

• Highly robust and highly reliable comprehensive protection: Advanced on-chip protection including overcurrent, overtemperature, through and undervoltage lockout can improve system reliability.

Tools and support

In addition to the motor driver, the DRV10866EVM and DRV11873EVM evaluation modules (EVM) also include simple TLC555 timers, frequency generator outputs, PWM inputs, and motor connections for fast code-less motor evaluation. Both EVMs provide schematic and gerber files.
