The Energy Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan pointed out recently that the 700,000-unit traffic signal lights of Taiwan will be fully replaced into LED lights by October 2011. The Ministry of Economic Affairs is assessing the cost of NT$22 billion and replacing 800,000 mercury street lamps in Taiwan with LED lights. The overall assessment will be completed in 2011.
Wang Yunming, deputy director of the Energy Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, said that in 2009, the government will prepare a three-year, 750 million NTD budget, and it will refit 700,000 ç› traffic lights before the end of October 2011. By then, Taiwan will become the second area to fully refit LED lights after Singapore.
Wang Yunming revealed that in 2011, the government set a total of NT$6.326 billion in energy-saving and carbon-reduction budgets, a 27.3% increase from the 4.969 billion yuan in 2010, indicating that the government's policy of promoting energy-saving and carbon reduction is not shrinking.
He said that the three-year modified traffic light plan will be completed in 2011. In 2009, the Ministry of Economic Affairs applied for subsidizing 5,300 street lights in 47 townships that applied for subsidized LED street lights. If the implementation of the demonstration area is good, The Ministry of Economic Affairs also plans to replace the 800,000 mercury street lamps in Taiwan.
According to the statistics of the Energy Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, there are about 1.57 million traditional street lamps in Taiwan. The largest is mercury street lamps, with a total of 800,000 baht. The rest are fluorescent lamps and high-pressure lamps. The Energy Bureau believes that mercury lamps are the most energy-intensive.
