Microsoft will launch VR helmet in March will add new features from Baidu VR

At the GDC conference in March, Microsoft will begin shipping the first batch of wired MR helmets for Windows 10 PCs to developers. Microsoft's first shipment of Windows 10 VR headsets was primarily for developers writing and testing applications based on the Windows Holographic platform.

At a webinar on Friday, Microsoft's senior project manager Vlad Kolesnikov said that the VR helmet will work with the Windows 10 Creators Update.

The GDC conference will be held in San Francisco from February 27th to March 3rd. Microsoft does not sell its own commercial version of Windows 10 VR helmets. These commercial VR helmets will be sold later this year through Lenovo, Acer, Asus, HP, Dell and 3Glasses. As early as this month's CES conference, these brand manufacturers have demonstrated their own Windows 10 VR helmets.

An AR helmet like HoloLens allows users to interact with 3D objects displayed in the real world. With VR helmets like the Oculus Rift, users can use it to watch movies, use apps and experience 3D games. However, the latter needs to be connected to the computer to provide computing power to run, and HoloLens does not need to connect to the computer, because it itself integrates computing power.

Kolesnikov said Microsoft will provide an updated VR development API on the Webcast of Windows Developer Day on February 8th.

VR has certain requirements for the computing power of PCs, and Microsoft reduces VR requirements for PCs through some optimizations. The official minimum laptop configuration is a Core i5 processor with a Kaby Lake architecture and 8 gigabytes of dual-channel memory; the desktop is configured with a Core i5 processor with Skylake architecture. In order to keep up with fast-moving games, VR gamers also need a more powerful GPU, CPU, and memory. Microsoft's Windows 10 VR helmet also supports AMD processors and graphics cards, but did not give a minimum standard.

As soon as the player connects the Windows 10 VR helmet with the Windows 10 PC, the system will automatically detect the system and the driver will install it. The next step is to allow the user to create an "activities space" where the goal is to allow the player not to hit the wall or furniture while experiencing the VR helmet. The VR helmet will scan and draw a map of the room. Once the player exceeds the active area, the system will issue a warning.

The built-in camera will draw a mapping model from the acquired environment pictures. The VR helmet will also monitor player's activities through tracking technology.

Windows 10 VR helmets also work with Cortana so that users can use voice to give instructions or interact with content. The original Windows 10 VR helmet only supports 9 languages and will add additional languages during the holiday season this year.
