Ford used laser radar to allow autonomous vehicles to navigate on the snow, and now Ford uses the same technology to allow autonomous cars to navigate autonomously in the dark. The automaker has tested the Fusion Hybrid auto-driving car at its Arizona test site.
Ford said the self-driving car has a built-in LiDAR system that includes autopilot software, lidar and camera. Tests have shown that LiDAR is sufficient for the vehicle to navigate autonomously in the dark for automatic driving.
To achieve this goal, Ford uses high-resolution 3D maps, and the laser pulses emitted by the laser radar are used to determine the position of the vehicle on the 3D map. During the test, Ford completely shut down the headlights of the vehicle and tested it in a “black†environment, but the engineer was still sitting in the driver's seat using night vision goggles to monitor the vehicle's behavior and manually take over control of the vehicle if necessary.
