Since repositioning itself as a data-driven company, Intel has been working hard to develop efficient and precise interconnected computing solutions.
"Internet computing" is not a new idea—it was already on the radar when Otellini was CEO of Intel. Back then, the company was expanding its architecture beyond PCs and servers, into handheld devices, mobile internet devices, and embedded systems, aiming for consistency in software, services, and user experience.
Today, Intel has made significant progress in its transformation, and "internet computing" now carries a brand-new meaning.
Rob Topol, general manager of the Standards and Next-Generation Technologies division at Intel’s Communications and Equipment Group, also leads the company's 5G initiatives. According to him, while 5G is the fifth generation of wireless connectivity, it also marks the first true era of interconnected computing.
Topol sees a future where more devices are connected and equipped with powerful computing capabilities, changing how clouds, networks, access points, and devices interact. This shift opens up vast opportunities for companies like Intel to provide comprehensive end-to-end solutions.
To get ahead in this 5G revolution, Intel has invested heavily over the past two years. The company launched the world’s first Mobile Test Platform (MTP) to optimize modem solutions, conducted millimeter wave testing, and released the industry’s first 5G NR test platform—key steps toward achieving commercial 5G by 2020.
In Intel’s view, 5G isn't just 4G plus 1G—it represents a fundamental shift in communications and computing. As a result, collaboration is essential. Examples include:
1. In May, Intel partnered with Verizon and Ericsson for 5G residential access trials.
2. In June, Intel and China Unicom showcased commercial deployment solutions for MEC smart venues.
3. In March and August, Intel supported China Telecom in building a 5G innovation network in Xiong’an New District, joined an automotive edge computing alliance with Ericsson and Toyota, and collaborated with AT&T and Ericsson on millimeter wave trials to deliver ultra-fast 5G experiences.
Through these efforts, Intel aims to shape early 5G standards to better align with its application needs.

Topol mentioned that Intel is currently focused on conducting interoperability tests with system architects and network operators on 5G networks. Once standards are established, extensive testing will follow. He also revealed that Intel plans to launch its first 5G standard later this year.
What kind of innovations will 5G bring when combined with artificial intelligence?
While previous generations of wireless communication were driven primarily by software, the 5G era is different. According to Topol, 5G will carry massive AI data, and devices will not only communicate with the network but also make intelligent decisions based on AI. The network itself will become smarter, more flexible, and cloud-like, capable of virtualizing and optimizing itself based on real-time needs.
In short, 5G networks won’t be just software-defined—they’ll be intelligent, adaptive, and as dynamic as AI-powered devices. AI and 5G will merge, creating new possibilities and energy for the digital world.
“AI will definitely enhance the performance of our phones, devices, and networks in the future,†he added.
When discussing the future of 5G and standardization, Topol believes that when new networks and standards emerge, people usually focus on those who can benefit from them immediately. But he warns that we often miss the applications that will gain the most from these technologies. For example, ten years ago, when 4G LTE was being developed, smartphones were still a novelty, with only around one million iPhones sold.
“The same applies to 5G today. While car networking, smart homes, and smartphones are top of mind, the real potential lies in the new applications we haven’t even imagined yet,†concluded Topol.
