IR small high performance high voltage IC simplifies HID ballast design

Editor's note: International Rectifier (IR) introduced the IRS2453D series of 600V self-excited full-bridge driver ICs. This series is suitable for HID ballast applications such as general lighting, outdoor lighting and projectors. The new device integrates two high-end and two low-side gate drivers using IR's proprietary high-voltage integrated circuit (HVIC) technology. This helps improve device performance, meets tighter specifications, improves temperature stability, and integrates features not previously available. The IRS2453D has a simple RC network for oscillator programming that eliminates the need for two synchronous half-bridge drivers. Conversely, a solution using two SO-8 package driver ICs requires a separate oscillator to drive different half bridges. As the tolerance and temperature cause a mismatch in the punctual state, a load-symmetrical voltage is generated. . In lighting applications, this will cause mercury to move and shorten lamp life. The IRS2453D effectively solves this problem by using a single oscillator to drive the two half-bridge drivers to ensure an accurate match over temperature and supply voltage. The IRS2453D also greatly simplifies the overall design, integrating latching and non-latching shutdown inputs, saving up to seven devices. Blocking shutdown allows for different protection functions such as periodic overcurrent, open load or short circuit detection without the need for additional components; instead of latching shutdown, it provides more options for various microcontrollers for power management applications. Simple interface. The IRS2453D is a lead-free device in a 14-pin DIP and SO package that includes a 50% duty cycle, a fixed 1 microsecond (typical) internal dead time, and an integrated bootstrap circuit. The new ICs are designed for the low frequency AC voltage required to drive HID lamps and are also suitable for other high frequency applications such as fluorescent ballasts and power supplies. Other major specifications of the IRS2453D include a 15.6V Zener two-stage clamp VCC and a 140μA typical micropower start-up circuit. Noise immunity is achieved by the low di/dt peak of the gate driver and the undervoltage lockout hysteresis function of over 1.5V.
