Osram will stop producing OLED displays and close related plants in Penang, Malaysia. In the future, the company will focus on lighting solutions based on OLED technology.
The Siemens subsidiary will exit the production of OLED-based passive matrix LED displays by the end of the year. But its OLED activities will focus on developing lighting solutions that are ready to go public. “After all, we are a company engaged in lighting products,†Osram’s spokesperson explained. "Our market expectations for OLED displays have not been realized."
Since 2003, OSRAM has produced "Pictiva" brand passive matrix displays, which are used in a wide range of fields including communication systems, industrial and mobile communications. But demand has not reached the expectations of OSRAM.
The company will transfer 270 employees to other businesses within Osram Semiconductors, including its new LED chip factory in Penang.
Two weeks ago, OSRAM started construction at the new LED factory in Penang, which will create about 800 jobs. In addition, the company also announced that it will increase its back-end capacity in the region by 50%. The investment in this new plant is tens of millions of euros.
The new plant plans to increase capacity in the first quarter of 2009. According to the above spokesperson, OSRAM also plans to increase production at its Regensburg plant in Germany.
