Fairchild Semiconductor Introduces the Most Integrated Ballast IC Products

Fairchild Semiconductor has introduced the FAN7710, the most integrated ballast IC product on the market for the design of compact fluorescent lamps. With a "system-in-package" approach, the FAN7710 simplifies design while overcoming performance and overcomes space-constrained issues in CFL lighting applications.

The FAN7710 incorporates a 625V high-side gate driver circuit, two 550V MOSFETs, a frequency control circuit, and a shunt regulator in an ultra-compact 8-DIP package with active ZVS control and turn-on detection. As the most integrated device in its class, the FAN7710 helps designers reduce component count to simplify design. The FAN7710's high functionality and built-in protection features save board space, reduce power consumption, and achieve excellent temperature characteristics and improved end system reliability.

In addition to the FAN7710, Fairchild also introduced the FAN7711 device for linear fluorescent lamp (LFL) designs and CFL applications. In addition to two high-power MOSFETs, this ballast IC integrates all of the components in the FAN7710, making it more suitable for LFL designs. The FAN7711 is available in both 8-DIP and 8-SOP packages.

"As the most integrated ballast IC, the FAN7710 is the ideal system-in-package solution for space savings in CFL designs," said Jay Lee, director of Fairchild's lighting product line. By simultaneously introducing the FAN7711 for LFL and CFL applications, Fairchild's product portfolio enables designers to flexibly optimize power, performance and space to meet specific application requirements."

The main features of the FAN7710 and FAN7711 are as follows:

?D?D built-in adaptive ZVS control to improve system stability, no need to external lighting protection circuit; and built-in 15V shunt regulator to ensure the stability of operation.

?D?D requires only two frequency and time control pins, which simplifies system design compared to the four pins required for conventional devices.

The D?D programmable warm-up time and operating frequency help increase flexibility.

The D?D built-in HVIC features noise cancellation circuitry (high dv/dt common mode noise), undervoltage protection (UVLO) and a pass-through output buffer for added reliability.

These products are available in lead-free packages that meet or even exceed IPC/JEDEC's J-STD-020C standard and comply with EU standards now in effect.
